Tom Benney, 84, Honorary Town Crier City of Salisbury South Australia has been a Town Crier for over 40 years and spends most of his time carrying out duties.
Tom said it has always been a dream of his since May 8 1945 when as a 10-year-old he saw Town Crier Alfie Howard of Lambert London tell-all about the end of the War. Tom watched the Town Crier and said he wanted to be a Town Crier just like him. Tom said, “everyone has a dream and he is enjoying his dream.”
Tom took part in his first Town Criers Championship in 2005 at the 11th Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers World Town Criers Championship’s in Maryborough Queensland Australia and he has been attending championships ever since.
Tom has enjoyed winning awards one for Most Entertaining Cry 2006 at the 16th National Town Criers championships of The Ancient and Honourable Guild of Australian Town Crier’s Championships at Gosford City New South Wales
In 2007 Tom was Winner of the 6th Loudest Cry at the 17th National Championships at Moree New South Wales and winner 5th Loudest Cry at the 18th National championships at Parkes New South Wales …truly a character who enjoys his work!
